Mailchimp Essentials prices from mailchimp.com/pricing, monthly billing, October 2026. Above 50,000 contacts Mailchimp sells only Standard. Mailchimp counts unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts unless you archive them (mailchimp.com/help).

How Mailchimp counts contacts

Mailchimp sorts everyone in your audience into subscribed, unsubscribed, non-subscribed and cleaned. Its help pages say subscribed, non-subscribed and unsubscribed contacts all count toward your contact limit. Archived contacts don't.

That's why lists that have been around a few years cost more than they look: every person who ever unsubscribed is still on the bill. Read more in Does Mailchimp charge for unsubscribed contacts?

Questions

Archive the unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts you no longer need, since archived contacts don't count, or move to a tool that doesn't bill for them.
