Does Mailchimp charge for unsubscribed contacts?
Yes. Mailchimp's help center says subscribed, non-subscribed and unsubscribed contacts all count toward your plan's contact limit, so you pay for people you're not allowed to email. The way to stop paying for them is to archive them: archived contacts don't count toward your billing tier, but you can't email or edit them while they're archived.

What Mailchimp counts
Mailchimp prices its plans by contact count. Its help page on pricing tiers says that "subscribed, non-subscribed, and unsubscribed contacts all count toward your contact limit" (as of October 2026).
In practice that means:
- Unsubscribed people asked you to stop emailing them, and they still count.
- Non-subscribed people, often store customers or contacts added by an integration, never agreed to marketing email, and they count too.
- Over years, these can add up to a large share of an audience. If they push you over a tier boundary, your monthly price goes up even though nobody new can receive your newsletter.
To see what you're paying for them, put your subscribed and total contact counts into the Mailchimp cost calculator.
A worked example
Say your Audience page shows 2,000 subscribed contacts, 600 unsubscribed and 200 non-subscribed. You can email 2,000 people, but Mailchimp counts 2,800.
That puts you past the 2,500 contact tier, which is $45 a month on Essentials (as of October 2026), and into a higher one. Archive the 800 people you can't email and you're back at 2,000, under that 2,500 tier.
The numbers are on your Audience dashboard. Check them once a quarter, because unsubscribes build up a few at a time after every send and are easy to miss.
How to archive contacts to lower the bill
Mailchimp's own fix is archiving. These are the steps in its help center as of October 2026:
- Click Audience, and choose the audience if you have more than one.
- Filter or segment to the contacts you want, such as everyone unsubscribed.
- Tick the contacts. For a segment, select all contacts in it and use Actions.
- Click Archive and type ARCHIVE to confirm.
Mailchimp says archived contacts don't count toward your billing tier. After archiving, open your plan settings and check which contact tier you're billed for, so you know the change actually lowered your price.
The tradeoffs of archiving
- You can't email or edit archived contacts. For unsubscribed people that's fine, since you can't email them anyway.
- Their history is kept. Mailchimp keeps their data and they still show in old reports.
- They can come back. Contacts are unarchived if you re-import them, unarchive them by hand, or they sign up again through your form or interact with a connected store. They return with their most recent subscription status, so an unsubscribed person stays unsubscribed.
- It's a chore you repeat. New unsubscribes keep arriving after every send, so you need to archive again to keep the count down.
- It isn't deletion. Mailchimp notes that archiving is not a legal substitute for deleting someone who asked to have their data removed under GDPR.
How MailWild handles it
MailWild bills only contacts you can actually email. Unsubscribed and bounced people stay in your account so they're never emailed again, but they don't count toward your plan, and each person is counted once even if they're on several lists. There's nothing to archive.
When you import Mailchimp's export zip, unsubscribed and cleaned contacts come over as unsubscribed, and non-subscribed contacts are left out. MailWild is also at least 25% cheaper than Mailchimp Essentials at every size we sell. See the pricing page, or read how to move from Mailchimp.
To be fair to Mailchimp: it does far more than MailWild, including landing pages, A/B testing and SMS. If you need those, archiving regularly is the way to keep its bill down.
